Amazon's Bee Listens All Day So It Can Summarise You. The Phone Already Does That
Based on reporting from TechCrunch
Bee, the AI device company Amazon bought last year, launched its first new products since the acquisition: Bee Frontier and Bee Eclipse, wearables that listen to conversations around you and summarise them later, from $74.99, with Alexa integration. The full feature set needs a Pro subscription.
Start with the thing being sold, stated plainly: a microphone that is always on, in your house, run by a company whose business is knowing things about you. There is no price at which I want that object, and the discount that would change my mind does not exist.
But refusing is only half an answer, because the problem it solves is real. Meetings do get forgotten, and a summary of a long conversation is genuinely useful.
So here is what I would do instead, and it costs no hardware. Run something like Granola on the phone you already carry: it listens when you tell it to, for the meeting you chose, and stops. Or wire something up with an AI model yourself, which is more work and leaves you knowing exactly what is recorded and where it goes. Both get you the summary. Neither puts a device whose job is listening on your body all day.
Then there is the subscription, the second pattern here: $74.99 does not get you the whole product. The hardware is the entry fee and the features arrive monthly, which is how a cheap device turns out not to be cheap.
So, do I buy it? No. If you want meeting summaries, use an app you switch on deliberately. The difference between a microphone you start and one that is always listening is the entire question.
