A $742 QD-OLED Ultrawide Is Worth It for Films, Not Just for Frames
Based on reporting from The Verge

Alienware’s AW3426DW, a 34-inch ultrawide with a QD-OLED Penta Tandem panel and a 280Hz refresh rate, launched a couple of months ago and has dropped to $742.22 on Amazon from $799.99. It is not the lowest price it will ever reach, but it is one of the first real cuts since release.
I would buy it, and the reason is not the 280Hz.
A monitor is one of the few purchases that comfortably passes my five to eight year test. Processors age, phones age, a panel in front of your eyes every day does not become obsolete: it either still looks good or it does not. Spending more on the screen and less on the parts behind it has been the right call for a long time.
What makes OLED worth the premium here is films rather than games. Black that is actually black changes a dark scene in a way a specification chart cannot convey, and that is the thing you notice on a Sunday night, not the refresh rate. The 280Hz is there, and competitive players will use it. Most people will see it on the box and benefit from the contrast instead.
The honest caveat is that this is a first discount, not a floor. If you can wait for a seasonal sale, you will probably do better. If your current screen is tired, the gap between $742 and the eventual best price is small spread over the years you will own it.
So, do I buy it? Yes, if it replaces a monitor you are unhappy with. Judge it as a display for everything you watch, not as a gaming spec, and the price starts looking like what it is: the part of the setup that outlives all the rest.
