The AirTag Silencer Lasted Two Weeks. The Real Question Is Why It Shipped.

My verdict: this should not have reached a shelf. It did, and the pulled listing does not fix that.

ElevationLab announced the AirTag Silencer on 30 September for $9.99. According to 9to5Mac, it uses a piercing mechanism to disable an AirTag’s speaker without damaging the rest of the device. Glenn Fleishman then argued in Six Colors that silencing an AirTag helps stalkers and enables domestic violence, because the speaker is part of how someone finds out they are being tracked. On 13 October ElevationLab pulled the product, including from Amazon, and apologised. The company says it wanted silencing for the AirTags on its own bikes, that it recognises the product could help someone track a person who would not get a phone alert, and that it will use its patent to stop others from making something similar.

Apple had already made the speaker harder to remove in the second-generation AirTag. 9to5Mac notes that ElevationLab, a long-time maker of AirTag accessories, would have known about that change. That is the part that bothers me. The warning was already on the hardware.

In my view, products keep arriving that clearly did not go through a proper testing phase, and this looks like another one. I do not know how it happened inside the company. If the design is as flawed as the critics say, the sensible move is to rethink the whole idea and not only the marketing.

Is it the system working or a failure that came late? Both. Public pressure removed it quickly, and it was still on sale for roughly two weeks. If you bought one, I would stop using it. And before you buy any accessory that changes how a tracker behaves, read what it does to the safety features first.
