Oura Ring 5 or Apple Watch Series 12: One Charges You Monthly for Data It Already Collects
Based on reporting from Engadget

My verdict: the ring costs $70 a year to unlock what it already measures, and I avoid products built that way. Whether the watch is the right alternative depends on what you want to know.
Both start at about $400. The Series 12 has a touch screen, GPS, and core health tracking that needs no subscription, according to Apple. Apple Fitness+ is an optional extra. The watch needs charging every day. The Oura Ring 5 lasts six to nine days and is far more discreet, but Oura’s own support page says that without a paid membership you only get the basic daily scores. Heart rate tracking, including the 24-hour kind, requires membership. The membership costs $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year.
The arithmetic is simple. Over three years the ring comes to about $609 and the watch stays at about $399, before you count anything else. The ring does collect the data without membership, and then holds back the part you wanted to see.
Here is how I put it. Would you pay a monthly fee to switch on the heating in your car seat? The heater is already there. Many companies are trying to force a subscription into products, even for something included at the moment of purchase. If a product does not give me every function I chose it for, or if the company splits the functions into pieces, I avoid it.
To be fair, the answer depends on the information each person wants and how much they are willing to pay for it. A ring suits someone who cares about comfort and battery, and who accepts the fee. A watch suits someone who wants the screen and does not want a bill.
