A short life for a niche mode is not a scandal. It is how these things usually go.

Riot introduced League Classic in July, a mode for replaying older versions of the game. It will close in early January 2027, at the end of Season 3. Riot says interest faded quickly and that many players went back to other parts of League. It aims to bring Classic back, likely as an event mode with adjustments. Engadget’s own view is that Riot has not quite nailed the balance to keep people playing.

I played League of Legends for about ten years. I stopped about a year ago, but I still watch matches and tournaments from time to time. Classic was always going to be niche, and with every new mode Riot adds, the community spreads thinner across all of them. That is the risk of launching anything for a very specific audience: not enough players show up, or it is not what they expected.

Nostalgia is part of that risk. It does not always work. We often long for the past, and when we get it back it is not what we remembered.

It also changes how I choose games. I like to feel that my time will not disappear because someone else made a decision, and some time ago I left fully online games altogether. Lately I have been playing Enshrouded with a small group of friends. It is a lot of fun and I recommend it.
