Asking for a subscription to use Gemini 4 Argon is not reasonable to me. It is understandable, though, and both things can be true at once.

Google made Gemini 4 Argon available in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Search on October 13, but only for Google AI Pro subscribers ($20 a month in the US) and AI Ultra (from $100 a month). Google says it answers faster, with less filler and fewer clichés. Artificial Analysis, which runs a composite of AI benchmarks, puts it level with OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra on its Intelligence Index. Developers pay per token through the API, at an introductory $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens until November 30, when both prices double.

I understand the logic. It is Google’s newest model and, by that benchmark, it is on par with the big models we already pay for elsewhere. In my view, most companies keep their strongest model behind a subscription now; OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, for example, is only on paid ChatGPT plans. Understanding it does not mean I have to like it.

My condition is simple: as long as there is a free option we can actually use, I will take the deal. And that is exactly the part that just moved. Since October 9, four days before Argon arrived, free Gemini accounts are limited to a single model, Flash-Lite, with no choice of Flash or Pro. Free Gemini still exists. It is just smaller than it was a week ago, and that is the line I will be watching.

Read Google’s announcement and the plans page yourself, and check what your free account gets today before deciding whether $20 a month is worth it to you.
