Withings accounts created from 12 October 2026 need a paid Withings+ membership, $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, for a scale or watch to sync automatically with other apps, including Apple Health and Google’s health platform. Existing accounts are untouched: if your readings already flow, they keep flowing. Withings says the subscription funds clinical validation and the platform behind it.

Charging for the integration is the part that changes what the product is.

A Withings scale was, for years, a scale that put your weight where you already keep your health data. That was the pitch, that was the reason to pay more than a cheap scale costs, and now it costs a hundred dollars a year on top. The hardware did not change. The sensor still captures the number, the phone still receives it. What is being sold is permission to move your own measurement from one app on your phone to another app on your phone.

Doing it only for new accounts is clever and it tells you how well the company expects it to land. Existing owners do not riot, new owners never knew it was free, and the change costs the company nothing in goodwill it can measure.

I would not call it illegal, and I am not a lawyer, but I will say what it feels like from where I stand: a feature that was part of the product being turned into a toll after the fact, for everyone who shows up late.

So, do I buy it? I would switch brands. Several makers still sync to Apple Health and Google at no charge, and a scale is not a product where the premium one is so much better that an annual fee for data transfer makes sense. Check that sync is free before you buy, not after.
