You Do Not Need the $90 Switch 2 Pro Controller, and the Reason Is Who Is Holding It
Based on reporting from Engadget

Nintendo sells the Switch 2 Pro Controller for $90. There are third-party pads that do the same job for a fraction of that, and the comparison usually ends in a list of features. I think it ends somewhere else: with who is going to be holding the thing.
I did not buy the official one. I bought two unbranded controllers, shipping included, for about half the price of a single Pro Controller. That was not a compromise I made reluctantly. It was the right call, and it is the same call I make every time for a console.
Consoles in my house get used by nephews. Things get dropped, trodden on, and handed back sticky. Paying for build quality on an object whose fate is already decided is not thrift, it is realism: buy two cheap ones and keep playing when one dies. On the PC I do the opposite and buy the best I can afford, because that machine is mine, I use it daily, and I want it to last years.
Same buyer, opposite decisions, and the variable is not the price. It is whether I control how the thing gets treated.
So, where is the line where cheap turns expensive? Narrower than people claim. A budget pad that fails after a couple of years of being thrown around has done its job. What makes a purchase bad is arriving broken with no way to replace it, which is a seller problem rather than a price problem. Buy from somewhere that takes returns and the risk mostly disappears.
So, do I buy it? Buy the official one if the controller is for you, you play a lot, and it has to survive years. If it is for a living room where other people play, buy two cheap ones and keep the change.
