Apple's AI Camera Summaries Are Free. The Storage Plan They Live In Is Not

iOS 27 adds AI summaries for Apple Home cameras: they describe what was recorded, group clips from several cameras into one event, let you search footage in plain language and bundle similar videos so you get fewer notifications. Turning it on is free. Using it needs a HomePod and the larger iCloud+ tiers, which run up to around $700 a year.

The features are the right ones. Anyone who has lived with security cameras knows the actual problem is not recording, it is that you end up with four hundred clips of a tree moving and you stop looking at any of them. Summarising and grouping is the fix.

What I object to is where the price is hidden. This is an AI feature billed through a storage plan. You are not paying for the intelligence, you are paying for gigabytes you may not need, and the intelligence rides along. Pay less storage, lose the feature, even if your camera count never changed.

Assistants that do this kind of summarising on their own subscription already exist, which is what makes the packaging feel like a toll rather than a price. A feature with its own number attached can be compared against those. A feature folded inside a storage tier cannot, and that is usually the point.

So, do I buy it? Not at that level. If you already pay for the big iCloud+ tier for other reasons, switch it on, it is genuinely useful. If you would be upgrading storage to get it, price what a standalone assistant costs to do the same job first, and remember you are being asked to buy space you did not ask for.
